During Easter 2015, MJL built its first well in India, in a village just outside the city of Chennai. Now, well number 25 has been completed in the village of Yallamanda, located in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
The driving force behind the well project in Andhra Pradesh is Evangelist Timothy. Since we began building wells in the region, he has been actively involved, compiling a long list of villages in need of clean water. These wells are life-changing, offering communities access to safe drinking water and improved health.
Most of the people living in these villages are casteless and often cannot afford to purchase water. As a result, they rely on contaminated sources outside their villages, leading to illness and, in some cases, even death.
Well number 25, now completed in Yallamanda, will serve a population of around 5,000 people. Most residents are laborers. The population consists of approximately 50% Hindus, 30% Muslims, and the remaining 20% Christians. Yallamanda lies near the famous temple city of Kotappakonda, and the road to the temple passes through the village. This strategic location means that the new well could benefit not only the residents but also many passersby.
Each year on February 26, Kotappakonda hosts one of the largest religious festivals in India, attracting 3 to 4 million people. The availability of clean water from the well increases opportunities for outreach and evangelism. We must think strategically: the next well will likely be built in Kotappakonda! WOW!!
Evangelist Timothy has met with Yallamanda’s local leaders, all of whom support MJL’s initiative to build a well in their village. Pastor Nasarayya from the Mispa Prayer Center has kindly granted permission for the well to be built on church property—creating a significant opportunity for ministry in the area.
Drilling began on Friday, February 21. Just three days later, the well was inaugurated—bringing great joy to the people of Yallamanda.
