Watch out for the trends
In our service, we can encounter many new religious trends. One can easily become preoccupied with outward manifestations and easily create a doctrine around them. Some may easily get carried away and become unbalanced and out of sync with the Bible's most important teachings. When these are deprioritized in preaching, we must be vigilant.
In Paul's time, he experienced that some in the congregation in Corinth were creating religious cliques. Some adhered to Paul, others to Apollos, and others to Peter. Paul did not accept this. He corrected them:
"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified."
1 Cor 2:2 NKJV
We must also learn spiritual discernment: To place the Bible's most important teachings at the top of the priority list, otherwise we may end up in spiritual fanaticism.
Many years ago, Solveig and I worked at a nursing home in a place ten miles south of London, in South Chailey, near the town of Lewes. While we were there, we visited London. During the visit, we took a trip to the famous Speaker’s Corner. Here, anyone could say almost anything. While we were there, three different speakers presented their speeches. I noticed one of them, a small woman in a white silk dress. She almost looked like an angel as she stood on a box and shouted: "Come to our meetings, for we receive angelic revelations!"
The Bible does not teach that one can order such revelations. This was a result of fanaticism.
Paul said:
"I know whom I have believed."
2 Tim 1:12 NKJV
It is important to know what you believe in theologically, but most importantly, you must know who you believe in—Jesus of Nazareth.
"Consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession."
Hebrews 3:1 NKJV
What He taught and the way He lived and worked has made, and continues to make, an indelible impression on me. He is everything you need in time and eternity.
