The Problem step
God created us with a free will. He did not want us to be robots, but to choose, either to do His will or run our own course. The first humans, Adam and Eve, broke with God's will in Paradise, and ate from the Tree of Knowledge. Since then, what we call sin has entered the world. Sin is a "miss" in relation to God's will. It is to break God's commandments, run one's own course, independent of God, being the king in one's own life. War and evil, jealousy, violence, lies, and deceit have followed humans like a virus since the days of Adam. We think, do, and say things that God strongly dislikes. Sin has created a chasm between us and God. Sin breaks the connection with God:
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23
God is love, but He is thoroughly holy and righteous. He is a righteous Judge who must one day judge us humans for our sin. No judge has the ability to acquit a criminal. The criminal must receive their deserved punishment, even if the judge deeply cares for the criminal. Can you imagine a state with a judicial system where the criminal is not punished for their offense? Of course not. Does God have less of a sense of justice than we humans? Never! Breaking human commandments is one thing, but breaking God's eternal, holy commandments has even greater consequences. Sin must be atoned for and cannot be paid with good deeds, as we humans often believe. The Bible calls it "being lost," losing the right to eternal life and living an entire eternity away from God in a place of punishment called hell:
"He will by no means clear the guilty."
Exodus 34:7
Our sins, whether few or many, will prevent us from entering heaven:
"But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles..."
Revelation 21:27
Despite this – God has an answer to our dilemma, our sin problem.
