How could God remove the punishment that rested upon every person and at the same time be just? God sent His Son Jesus from heaven to earth. He was 100% God and 100% human in one person. He lived a sinless life and had nothing to be punished for. The sinless Jesus was the only one in the universe that God could use to remove the judgment on our sins. God allowed evil people to crucify His only Son. Jesus was chosen by God to be the target for God's judgment and punishment for our sins.

“And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”

1 John 2:2

Before He died, He exclaimed victoriously:

“It is finished!”

John 19:30

The word “finished” means in the original language “paid in full.” Jesus paid for our sins so that God now has a reason to give us pardon or forgiveness.

God wants to give us proof and a “receipt” that Jesus is the Son of God and that all our sins have been paid for.
