A disciple's call: "Follow me!"
Jesus said to His disciples: "Follow Me!" (Matt. 4:19) The best we can give to God is the right over ourselves. A true disciple of Jesus is a follower of Jesus, one who "forsakes all that he has" – for Jesus (Luke 14:33). He has submitted to the Master's will and guidance and allows himself to be used by Him (Matt. 8:19; 10:38; 16:24).
Jesus' command was not just for us to get people saved, but also to "make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19). Then the baton was to be passed on: A disciple trains a new disciple and so on.
The word "disciple" in Greek (the original language of the New Testament) means “apprentice” with a teacher or master. By being with his teacher, the disciple learned how things should be and done, and could then pass on these truths to new disciples. Discipling new converts can eventually become an interesting equation! Paul was on the same thought:
"And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."
2 Tim. 2:2
It is not enough to get people saved. It is certainly very great, but the mission is not finished, it is only just beginning. We must take the time to help them further, be mothers and fathers to the new converts until they can stand on their own and take over the baton. The goal is always Jesus' earnest desire: The Gospel should reach "to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
